What they didn’t tell you about T H E R A P Y

Before entering my practicum year, we had to pass different classes that prepared us on a theoretical level for what individual therapy is all about. I still have Dr. S’s words engraved in my mind, saying that one of the most important factors of successful psychotherapy is the dynamics of the client-therapist relationship. She would add, “Remember, it’s like you are mentally dancing with them. Some moves will be faster, others may be slower, but what is important is to resonate.”

Considering that there are two protagonists in therapy (i.e., the therapist and the client), it is pivotal to understand that both have a responsibility for their commitment to the client’s progress. Let me unpack what I mean. The client should understand the nature of the process and accept it at the same time. Therapy is not a linear process and does not necessarily progress in the way the client would like it to. They must be ready to be challenged, yet feel supported and safe to be vulnerable and learn different perspectives to handle what acts as an obstacle to their better quality of life.

An accurate diagnosis is crucial for successful treatment. Therefore, it is essential that the therapist is competent and knowledgeable enough to understand the client’s personality, the way they communicate, and what would help them achieve their goals based on how the dynamics of the mind work. If the therapist falls into the trap of not following the architecture of the mind (psyche), then they may just suggest their opinion. The problem with opinions is that they tend to project the other person’s belief system, which may have nothing to do with yours. Hence, sometimes asking for a friend’s opinion may not be helpful and may even be detrimental.

Taking the decision to start therapy is a courageous act because you have decided to challenge yourself and maybe discuss uncomfortable topics that may engender negative feelings. However, therapy should be seen as an investment in yourself. As with any investment, to be considered worthwhile, you must have a goal of what you want to achieve, determination for those moments when you lack motivation, and knowledgeable professionals to guide you on your choices.
